REVIEW: Benromach 10 year

Name: Benromach

Age: 10 years

Type: Single Malt

Origin: Speyside, Scotland

ABV: 43%

Ave Price: £34.50

My Rating: 4.5/5

After wanting to actually buy Benromach Organic I ended up buying a bottle of Benromach 10 year old instead. (I’m yet to try the Organic version but if it’s anything like the 10 year it will be superb.)

All you have to do is look at the awards that B10 has picked up, especially over the last 3 years. Pretty impressive.

As someone who hasn’t yet developed a love for strong smokey whiskies, but wants more than the soft, fruitful flavours, this is the perfect mix of both. Benromach 10 has a light smokiness while remaining fresh, with a beautiful mix of sweet and spice. For every smokey/spicy aroma or taste there’s a sweet one running right alongside it. If you’re in the right mood for the spice then a small dram straight from the bottle can be a good move. It wakes up the senses, kind of like a cold shower.

With a drop of water though it’s an extremely palatable Whisky. I don’t always get the creamy chocolate coming through but when I do it is the perfect combination of flavours – the spice and smokiness to remind you that you’re drinking Whisky but with a sweetness that lets you just sit back and unwind.

Without Water

Nose: Fresh wood/nut (perhaps from the oak barrels) and burnt (smokey) caramel/toffee.

Taste: Spice, Sherry

With Water

Nose: Toffee, Smoky, Nutty, sometimes hints of creamy chocolate

Taste: Creamy chocolate, nutty, toffee, Sherry, smoky, sometimes hints of fruits like dark berries (rather than light fresh fruits)

TRY IT FOR YOURSELF. WHAT DO YOU GET ON THE NOSE? WHAT CAN YOU TASTE?
